Schar & Longstaff lift Newcastle above Burnley

Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff’s first-half goals earned a 2-0 victory for Newcastle United against Burnley at St James’ Park.

After Miguel Almiron shot a wide early on, Schar unleashed an unstoppable strike which flew in off a post after 24 minutes.

7 minutes before half-time, Matt Ritchie’s cross was half-cleared by Ben Mee and Academy graduate Longstaff lashed in his first Premier League goal.

Salomon Rondon and Almiron both had chances to make the match safe for Newcastle before a late header by substitute Peter Crouch was hoisted to safety by Jamaal Lascelles.

Newcastle climbs to 13th place, on 31 points, leapfrogging Burnley, whose eight-match unbeaten streak ends with them dropping to 15th place on 30 points.
